Biography

Modifi is a Sydney based producer, dj and performer with a unique sound fusing twin sonic passions: electronic music and the didjeridoo.

First inspired by electronic music in the 90s, Modifi started out with a set of decks as a vinyl dj, developing a taste for the sound of the underground. In 2003, he moved on to the computer and into production, loving the creative freedom of writing his own tracks.

His decade long passion for the didjeridoo began when he moved to Central Australia in the late 90s and was inspired by hearing the instrument played like never before. He honed his didj skills during his time in the Northern Territory, learning not only to play but also the symbolic history of the didjeridoo, travelling to Arnhem Land to spend time with the didjeridoo’s traditional custodians. He also spent a number of years as didj player with renowned Australian live dance band, ‘Loonaloop’. During this time, he played at some of the world’s biggest festivals, including Glastonbury (UK), Love Planet (CZ) and the Big Day Out (Aus).

Modifi was born when he combined his love for electronic music production with his passion for live didjeridoo performance. Today, Modifi’s electrifying live act combines original driving techno beats with cheeky edits of some of the chunkiest tracks around, creating an atmosphere of rolling bass lines and energetic grooves. This is overlaid with the raw sound of didjeridoo, performed live with rhythm and punch, giving his act a unique energy that has got the crowd moving at some of the biggest festivals in Australia, including Illumination in Cairns, Peat’s Ridge Festival and a slew of underground bush parties up and down Australia’s East Coast.

Recent production

The Modifi sound has changed direction over the last couple of years and taken a fresh, new direction, delving more into the underground realm of tech house and techno. The new tunes are loaded with energy and the combination of tech, techno and progressive, fused with solid didj rhythms takes the Modifi sound to new heights.

Performance

With a passion for electronic music and an enthusiastic stage presence, performance is paramount in Modifi’s live shows. Armed with a laptop, midi controller, didjeridoo and fx pedals, Modifi combines his own productions alongside cheeky edits of some of the chunkiest tracks he can get his hands on.

Previous production

In 2008, Modifi worked on the track ‘Spectrum’ with ‘Shades of Gray’, the acclaimed production duo and owners of the renowned Beef Records label. The track was released on the respected German label, ‘Plus Minus’, and pressed to vinyl. Listen to the digital release via Beatport below:

In 2007, Modifi added some of his tracks to the Triple J Unearthed website. They were an instant hit with three of them entering the top 10 of the Dance charts and one of them, Bass Hog, being played nationally on Triple J radio.

Debut Album – Didjeridoo Fusion

In 2006, Modifi’s debut album, ‘Didjeridoo Fusion’, was written by Michael Tosetto and Dougal Hallowes and was released independently. It is currently sold in select didjeridoo stores around Australia and was sold on the streets of Sydney when Modifi used to go out busking.

‘Didjeridoo Fusion’ blends the electronic with the organic through a collection of eight unique dance tracks. The aim of this project was to take listeners on a journey through different genres of dance music with the didjeridoo being the driving force behind the overall sound. Mike plays the didjeridoo on all of the tracks in his contemporary, percussive style. The tight, punchy rhythms sit right amongst the groove. The album also features a range of different musical instruments such as bass, drums, violin, keys and percussion.

Upcoming Events

Modifi is looking forward to performing on the main stage again at this years Illumination party in Cairns in November. Last year was the Illumination’s 10th anniversary, where Modifi played alongside Endorphin. It’s going to be hard to top such a great party but Illumination just gets better every year.
